Alex Murdaugh, a former attorney, was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday for the 2021 murder of his wife and son in South Carolina. His defense team, led by Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, have a long history with the Murdaugh family and plan to appeal the conviction. According to CBS News, the appeals process could take a year or more and Murdaugh is currently at the Kirkland Reception and Evaluation Center in Columbia, and will likely be transferred to a maximum security prison.

The Murdaugh family has been in the spotlight since the trial began, with Netflix's new docuseries "Murdaugh Murders" released and nine key moments from the trial highlighted. The attorney's tearful testimony and the family dogs helping convict Murdaugh were two of the most memorable moments. The judge who sentenced Murdaugh told him his murdered wife and son "will visit you at night".

Murdaugh still faces nearly 100 charges for financial crimes, which will be tried at a later date. It is not yet clear what will happen to his father's money, as his surviving son Buster Murdaugh is not currently working as a lawyer.

The Murdaugh family has been linked to three other deaths, including a 19-year-old student found dead in rural South Carolina. Additionally, a historian uncovered another suspicious Murdaugh family death from the 1940s that resulted in a huge payout.

The appeals process for Alex Murdaugh's conviction is underway, and it is unclear what the outcome will be. It is certain, however, that the Murdaugh family will remain in the spotlight for some time.
