    Alex Murdaugh, a former attorney, was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday for the 2021 murder of his wife and son in South Carolina. His defense team, led by Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, have a long history with the Murdaugh family and plan to appeal the conviction. According to CBS News, the appeals process could take a year or more and Murdaugh is currently at the Kirkland Reception and Evaluation Center in Columbia, and will likely be transferred to a maximum security prison.

    On March 5, 2023, President Joe Biden visited Selma, Alabama, the site of the 1965 march for voting rights, to urge Congress to pass voting rights changes. Biden, who was joined by civil rights icon and late Congressman John Lewis’ widow, Lillian Lewis, invoked the legacy of Lewis and called for the passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act.
