Heumann was a leader in a historic, nonviolent occupation of a San Francisco federal building in 1977 that set the stage for passage of the Americans With Disabilities Act. She helped many people accept who they were as disabled people and take pride in that identity. She was the co-author of her memoir, “Being Heumann,” and a version for young adults titled, “Rolling Warrior.” Heumann was in the hospital a week due to heart issues related to post-polio syndrome. She will be remembered for her tireless work to ensure that disabled people have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. Her legacy will live on in the many lives she touched and the laws she helped pass.
